Project Colony Ship was rear-ended this morning. The bumper is shoved in pretty far and is slightly bent.
I’m hoping it is just bumper bracket damage and not frame damage. Either way I did not need another thing to deal with at the moment.

Sad!
Hopefully it's just bumper damage. They're pretty soft aluminum.

dammit man, when docked you should have the bumpers out

Betting it’s just the bumper bracket.
Hope we’re both right, good luck!
Look at the bright side, if it had been a newer car it’d likely be over $1k in damage...

Probably just the collapsible brackets. On my 1983 Caprice Wagon I am going to drill out the brackets and collapse the oil filled cylinders to tuck the bumper a few inches. The brackets (on my Chevy) are simply bolted to the frame. To drop the bumper all you should need to do is take off the 8 bolts holding the brackets.

I’ll guess the offending vehicle looks like this:

Yeah, I'm hopeful that the bracket is just collapsed and stuck, but won't know until either a new bumper is bolted up or someone measures the frame.

What’s it look like from underneath? I am going to take a wild guess and say that the frame is fine and all you need is new brackets.
Good luck!

Not quite that bad, but yeah it was probably a few grand in damage .

The ship was underway and in a designated shipping lane. Fortunately that means maritime law is on our side.

Bracket is completely colapsed, but i cant see much more than that without crawling under. Which will have to wait until i get home.

Damn! Hope there's no frame damage friend! :(

5 mph bumpers may be bulky, but they work.

They never technically went away, right? We just no longer suck at making them.

The bumpers were the best part of the ma laise period. bumper has a sad but car does not. Highly effective bumpers.

They were downgraded to 2.5mph bumpers at some point, unless I have it wrong.
The actual bumpers are still here, but they’re now behind easily-damaged bumper covers with massive grille designs and sensors in front of it.

I think you are right.

I dunno, many old cars could shrug off a very low speed bump with zero damage. I don’t think any modern cars can do so today.

How else will they turn minor fender benders into major accidents with thousands of dollars of damage. Think of the money to be made!

I had an 85 stepside Chevy in high school and a lady in an 850i hit me, mine was ok but hers was like that.

No, that was dropped to 2.5mph in 1983, with the bumpers themselves allowed to take unlimited damage. Cars designed under the old 5mph rule often kept their older, tougher bumpers through the end of their production run.
Basically, bumpers today have to absorb up to 2.5mph impacts without damage to sheet metal, but it doesn’t matter if the bumpers themselves are totally obliterated in the process. Since bumpers are now completely integrated into the body, bumper damage is also know essentially the same thing as body damage, but the regulations still treat it separately.

On the plus side, the bumper did its job, doesn’t look like any damage to the body or tail lights, and even the bumper itself doesn’t look like it took damage. The impact was probably in excess of 5mph, so it the bracket might have collapsed to cushion the blow instead of springing back out.
Back in the day, this would not have been too serious at all, but with parts availability what it is now, it could be annoying to fix. Here’s hoping it turns out to be something simple.

I’d be amazed if there was frame damage (unless it’s super rusty), should just be the brackets doing their thing.
